What is manual lymphatic drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage is a gentle and specialised form of massage used to stimulate the lymphatic system. The aim of MLD is to redirect lymph fluid away from the swollen areas towards healthier lymphatics in areas of no swelling.

How does it work?

Light and rhythmic pumping movements are used to stretch the skin and stimulate the lymphatic system. The lymphatic vessels carry substances vital to the defence of the body and remove waste products. A well functioning lymphatic system plays an important part in the body’s immune responses.

Who is it for?

While used to treat many conditions, MLD is most widely used as one aspect of lymphodema management in combination with skin care, compression therapy and exercise.

MLD and lymphodema

Postural assessment and muscle testing techniques are used to assess the best form of treatment. Soft tissue release and stretching are used to treat and manage pain associated with the condition.
